bio

Exploring the complex interplay between trauma, healing, domesticity, and matrescenceโ€”the profound physical, emotional, and psychological transformation encountered during the postnatal journey of becoming motherโ€”Charmaine Beneyto considers this transition not merely as a biological passage but as a deeply creative and transformative process, often characterised by rupture and pain as well as resilience and healing.

Charmaineโ€™s practice and research currently centre on m*therhood and domesticity, interrogating how domestic spaces function simultaneously as sites of healing and repression.

In 2023, she was awarded A Room of Oneโ€™s Own by the International Association of Maternal Action and Scholarship, enabling her to further her research.

iโ€™m so glad i found you because without you i'd be lost (2025)
Acrylic, emulsion, industrial paint, found rubber, oil stick on canvas | 150cm x 200cm

Drawing from personal memory and creating a visual landscape for emotional catharsis, the painting explores childhood trauma and subsequent emotional experiences. Catalysed by matrescence, layers build to reflect the artistโ€™s journey toward growth and spiritual redemption. Acknowledging the intricate interplay between cycles of pain and healing, the work ultimately celebrates the rebirth and renewal that m*therhood offers.

Muddy Puddles (2025)
Sound Installation: Stainless steel bowl, rose quartz, quartz, water, amp, audio exciter

A sound installation that distorts the familiar song from the childrenโ€™s TV show, Peppa Pig, aims to disrupt the over familiar sounds of childrenโ€™s media. The artist has spent time exploring how the sound could be reappropriated into a geological artefact. The installation touches on the idea that capitalism and its role in child rearing is often manipulative and adhering to traditional family structures. By appropriating the sound of Muddy Puddles back into a precious gemstone, the sound becomes a site for healing, recuperation and spiritual cleansing.
